Project Detail: Legal Clinics
An organisation is deemed community based if the society can literally own it.This is what we call community ownership that enables the people and societies we work in feel proudly owners of the programmes implemented and better still having one that touches on the whole society. The birth of the legal clinics was importatnt with many of the crimes,or what is called torts in law being common in the areas but rather treated seriously by police for the lack of knowledge of the offenders. This is to mean that misdemeanors in the slums are rather treated with a lot of seriousness either for the police advantage and lack of knowledge by the society.Alot of cases in the slums from something lost, brotherly brawls, small misunderstandings end up in court while they could have been sorted by then chiefs. Some of the issues even have jailed people for a number of years due to lack of presentation in court or understanding of basic law to defend themselves.
The legal clinics empower the community on basic law, constitution of Kenya, human rights and also lends a listening ear to the many that have cases and questions to available paralegals, lawyers and advocates who partner with us in the different sessions. The clinics have had impact with many partners from different law offices to help with pro bono court presentations.
